Harry Redknapp 'serious' about taking job with England rivals Ukraine

Harry Redknapp has stressed that he is “serious” about the possibility of becoming manager of Ukraine national team after his agent, Paul Stretford, spent a second day in Kiev yesterday to hold talks about the job.

Stretford travelled to Kiev on Tuesday to meet representatives of Ukraine FA and, according to several sources, both sides have approached negotiations positively over what could be a lucrative contract.

Although Redknapp has previously only managed in the south of England, partly due to his Dorset family base, the reduced day-to-day commitments of managing a national team would still allow him to spend a significant amount of time at home.

Redknapp has been keen to get back into football in the Premier League but, with Chelsea preparing to appoint Rafael Benítez and Queens Park Rangers continuing to resist calls to sack Mark Hughes, he knows that he might also have to look abroad.

Ukraine are in the same World Cup qualifying group as England, with Roy Hodgson’s team due to travel to Kiev next September for what could be a pivotal fixture. Redknapp was overlooked for the England manager’s job and was then sacked by Tottenham despite Premier League finishes of fourth, fifth and fourth during three full seasons.

Ukraine went out in the group phase of Euro 2012 but their potential was evident during a draw and a defeat this year against England.

“It’s a fantastic job,” Redknapp said. “I found out about it a couple of weeks ago when they got in touch with my advisers. I am serious about it. They are an up and coming football country with some very good young players, some great teams like Shakhtar and some great stadiums.

“I will talk to them and see if we can sort something out. I’m definitely interested, without a doubt.”

The sitution could change, however, if Hughes was removed as manager of QPR. Tony Fernandes, the club’s chairman, wants Hughes to be given another chance to record a first Premier League win of the season in the match against Manchester United on Saturday. There is mixed boardroom support for Hughes although the cost of replacing him with Redknapp would be considerable.
