UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin commented to L'Equipe on the removal of the Russian national team from the 2024 European Championship qualifying draw.
“This is not today's decision. The decision for Russian national teams and clubs to remove them was a decision until further notice. This means that we are monitoring the situation. Until we change our mind, it will work. So we don't have to make decisions every time a new tournament starts.
We all hope that the war will end as soon as possible so that the Russian team can take part in our competitions. But given the situation as it is, we cannot even discuss it now. It is a combination of politics and sports. I cannot say now that if an agreement is signed, they will be able to compete. What we can do is speak up for peace,” Čeferin said.
