The European Football Union (UEFA) is going to hold a football tournament among youth teams in Volgograd.
This is reported by the Russian Football Union (RFU).
“In May 2023, it is planned to hold an international UEFA development tournament for youth national teams in Volgograd. Agreements on holding the tournament were reached with UEFA a few months ago," the Russians said in a statement.
It should be noted that this tournament will be the first in the aggressor country since the start of a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
The football competitions to be held in Russia are included in the UEFA development tournament program for boys and girls under 16.
Even in the first days of the full-scale invasion of Russian troops into Ukraine, UEFA and FIFA suspended the clubs and national teams of the Russian Federation from participating in tournaments under their auspices. In particular, Russian clubs were kicked out of the European Cups, and the Russian national team was excluded from the playoff selection for the 2022 World Cup.
Subsequently, UEFA extended the "ban" to the clubs and teams of the Russian Federation, banning the Russians from participating in competitions in the 2022/23 season. At the same time, we note that Russia has not yet been excluded from UEFA and FIFA.
