Former Belgium head coach Roberto Martinez has reached a verbal agreement with the Portuguese Football Federation to take charge of their national team, according to The Athletic.
The appointment of the 49-year-old Spaniard should be completed by the end of next week. Martinez, whose services have attracted interest from several clubs and national teams, is a free agent. After the completion of the 2022 World Cup, the specialist left his position as the head coach of Belgium.
"Six years have passed. I arrived with a clear idea to qualify for the 2018 World Championships. Then we got so excited about the project and won the bronze medal. I am very proud of these players. This was incredible.
Six years, when we could do whatever you wanted - team play brought people real joy. But it's time for me to make a decision. Since 2018, I've had many opportunities to leave and get a job at club level, but I wanted to stay loyal," Martinez said after leaving the Belgium national team.
Shortly after his official introduction, Martinez will play his first official match when Portugal host Liechtenstein in the first round of Euro 2024 qualifying on March 23.
