Former Manchester City defender Joao Cancelo has recalled a conversation he had with manager Pep Guardiola before leaving for Bayern Munich in January.
"As I already said, he found a new game pattern after the World Cup, in which the full-backs have to play more in the middle of the field. Pep liked how Rico Lewis and Ake acted in this role. I think every player is a little selfish. Everyone wants to feel important, they want to play, and anyone who says otherwise is lying.
A competitive player like me, who wants to win titles, just wants to play. It's not a question of devaluing my teammates. However, I thought I deserved to play and Pep didn't. So we talked and decided that it would be best for me to leave the club in this transfer window. It was by mutual consent. If City didn't want to, they wouldn't let me go because I had a contract. I have a difficult character, yes, but I have never shown disrespect to my teammates or coaches," O Jogo quoted Cancela as saying.
