Ten minutes into the match, D. Drexler's header broke the deadlock for Schalke 04, and 40 minutes later, M. Boulter doubled the lead. A few minutes later, Kralle earned a yellow for Schalke 04, after which VfB Stuttgart made a flurry of substitutions, introducing Gil Diaz and H. Ito. In the 57th minute, W. Anton replaced J. Vanjoman. In the 63rd minute, B. Sosa of Stuttgart made the score 2-1. This forced Schalke 04 to make a few changes: Balanta and T. Krauss took over for L. Greiml and M. Boulter respectively.
