On a sunny afternoon at Cardiff City Stadium, Wales hosted Latvia in a long-awaited European Championship qualifying match. With both sides aiming to win, the match promised to be an exciting one. In the second half Latvia tried to level the score but the Welsh defense stood firm, not allowing the visitors to take the lead. On 46 minutes B. Sorokins was replaced by R. Jurkovskis hoping to lend impetus to the attack. However, Wales kept on pressing and nearly extended their lead: 55 minutes into the match L. Moore's shot hit the crossbar. Then the situation got heated when Latvian player A. Chernomordijs was given a yellow card in the 58th minute.

In the 59th minute Latvia made the second substitution introducing J. Ikaunieks instead of A. Jaunzems. The match continued in a tense struggle. Both sides created chances but could not fulfill them. When the match came to its final stage, Latvia made two more substitutions, releasing A. Ciganix and R. Varslavans instead of A. Chernomordijs and R. Uldrikis respectively. Wales also made several changes: in the 73rd minute D. James was replaced by N. Brodhead. Latvian player A. Zuzins got a yellow card in the 62nd minute, and in the 82nd minute he was replaced by A. Saveljevs. At the end of the match both teams kept fighting but Wales managed to keep the lead and win in a hard-fought battle. In the final minutes, Wales made two more substitutions, releasing A. Ramsey and O. Cooper instead of H. Wilson and B. Cabango respectively. As a result, the match was a confirmation of the competitive nature of qualifying for the European Championship: both Wales and Latvia showed a spectacular and decisive game. Although neither side could convert their chances, it was Wales that came out the winner thanks to a goal from K. Moore in the first half.
