Former Dnipro, Metalist and other clubs' striker Yuriy Petrov died in the Netherlands on 29 April. The ex-forward was 48 years old and had problems with alcohol.
Yuriy Petrov finished his career in the summer of 2009 in the third Dutch league (team ASVH), and recently lived in a hospice. The death of the former forward was reported by journalist Oleg Lysenko.
The Kryvyi Rih native was one of only 16 players in the history of the USSR championship who managed to score in the top league at the age of 17. For Dnipro he scored against Shakhtar Donetsk. Yuriy was a great talent who could have fulfilled himself to a much greater extent. In the early 1990s, Petrov took Russian citizenship and played two games for the Russian youth team.
Petrov played for Dnipro, Spartak Moscow, Lokomotiv Moscow, SC Nikolaev, Vaalveik, Twente, ADO, Spartak-Alania, Volyn, SKA-Energia, Metalist and Volendam.
In 2012, the former footballer found himself in a social shelter at Tilburg (Netherlands). Yuri later admitted in interviews with the Dutch media that he used drugs after divorcing his wife.
