Bayer Leverkusen and Roma played out a goalless draw in the UEFA Europa League on a quiet evening at the BayArena. Despite both teams possessing the ball several times and creating several chances, they failed to score. The match started slowly, and neither team could succeed. However, on 34 minutes, Roma were the first to make a substitution: Leonardo Spinazzola was replaced by Nicolo Zalewski. Just before the break, Bayer Leverkusen received a yellow card - Panagiotis Hincapie was cautioned. The second half kicked off with another substitution for Roma: Andrea Belotti was replaced by Georginio Wijnaldum.
Bayer Leverkusen's Edmond Tapsoba was sent off shortly afterwards, followed by Maurits Bakker and Roma's Roger Ibañez. In the 73rd minute, Bayer Leverkusen made their first substitution: Bakker was replaced by Amin Adli. In the 78th minute, Roma made their third and final substitution with Zeki Celik replacing Christopher Smalling. Leverkusen then made two more substitutions as Palacios and Tach replaced Glozek and Amiri respectively. As the match drew to a close, tensions boiled over and a flurry of yellow cards were shown at half-time. AS Roma's Brian Cristante and Tammy Abraham were suspended, as were Moussa Diaby, Tapsoba and Javier Alonso of Bayer Leverkusen. In the end, both teams had to settle for one point. This result does not do much to improve the hopes of either team, but they have every opportunity to rectify the situation in the remaining group stage matches.
