FIFA is expanding and adapting its temporary employment rule to deal with the war in Ukraine, the association's press service has said. Notably, nowhere in the announcement is the initiator and aggressor of this war specified.
In particular, players and coaches will be granted the right to unilaterally suspend their employment contracts until 30 June 2024. This is done "in order to protect legionnaires and coaches who left the territory of Ukraine or Russia because of the conflict and do not wish to return at present".
At the same time, FIFA promises to "continue providing assistance to players, coaches and clubs affected by the war in Ukraine" as well as to "closely monitor the situation in Ukraine and Russia".
