Former Dnipro German head coach Bernd Stange has shared his memories of his compatriot Andreas Sassen, who played for the Ukrainian club in his time.
"He has a talent. Of course, not Effenberg, Müller or Basler, but he has a good school. But my God, they did not tell me what kind of man he is! I knew nothing about his binges in the FRG, but I quickly realised this at Dnipro. Sassen drank, smoked, broke the regime and was rowdy. This is a rare example of a German player with no professionalism at all!
At first I tried to calm Andreas down, appealed to his intelligence and responsibility. But when he went missing during training camp in Austria, and it turned out that he went on a two-day binge - partying - that was the last straw.
I removed him from the team as quickly as I could because I had young talents who I had infected with sporting prospects and he could shoot them down and denigrate them," Stange said.
