Scotland secured a vital win in their Eurocup qualifier against Georgia at Hampden Park. The home side started brightly and took the lead in the sixth minute thanks to a goal from K. McGregor. Georgia tried to respond immediately, but the sturdy Scottish defence held firm. As the half progressed, it became obvious that Georgia were failing to break down the Scottish defence and their frustration showed when A. Hickey was yellow carded in the forty-fifth minute. Despite this setback, Georgia started the second half on a positive note, but it was Scotland who struck again in the 47th minute courtesy of S. McTominay. Georgia tried to get back into the game but substitutions failed to turn the tide.
L. Dvali, B. Zivzivadze and N. Kvekveskiri were brought into the game but they could not break through the Scottish defence. Scotland had a chance to increase their lead in the 90th minute when Georgian player L. Gagnidze got his second yellow card and was sent off. However, K. Kvaratskhelia failed to convert a penalty and Scotland held on to win 2-0. As the game progressed, Scotland made several substitutions to bring the match to an end: C. Tierney, J. Souttar, C. McGregor, R. Jack, L. Dykes, C. Nisbet, B. Gilmour, C. McLean, J. McGinn and R. Christie. Overall it was a dominant game for Scotland who were never threatened by Georgia. A win keeps Scotland eligible for the European Championships and they can be assured of that strong performance. Conversely, Georgia must improve their performance if they want to have any chance of qualifying.
