Shakhtar Donetsk head coach Patrick van Leeuwen summarised the results of yesterday's match between his team and Veres of Rovno (1-1) in the 2nd round of the Ukrainian league.
"Not everything went according to our plan. We asked the players to start at a higher pace in order to quickly pass the opponents with passes. But the team started the match too slowly to surprise Veres with something.
The goal scored was a bit strange, but still it is a goal scored according to the rules - the referee was there and watched the situation. Then we got a red card, which forced us to change our tactics and the way we control the game, to focus on defence.
I do not agree that we had no chances: we had three or four chances that could have turned into a danger for Veres. Yes, there was more fighting in the second half because we were without one player.
"Veres took one point and fought until the end to get more. In the end, we have a good result. We are not satisfied with our game, but there is motivation that we did not lose, that some young players got experience of playing in the UPL," said van Leeuwen after the match with Veres.
