The Ukrainian national team played its fourth match in the 2024 European Championship qualifiers. Serhii Rebrov's men drew 1-1 with England in a nominally home match in Wroclaw. After the match, James Maddison assessed the course of the game and expressed his support for the Ukrainian people.
"To be honest, the crowd was incredible today. The way they supported the home team was very loud, very loud atmosphere. A lot of respect to the Ukrainian fans, they made this match more difficult. I'm really shocked. The Ukrainian fans did a great job.
Speaking about today's game, it was different [from the match in March]. The [Ukrainian] team's tactics were different, they didn't allow us to create a lot of space. We had a lot of possession, but it was very difficult to create any chances and break down their defensive structure.
It was hard for me to find space to get a pass in the first place, so a lot of respect to their defenders for what they did against us. But we are happy to have earned a point in the table.
Ukraine's defenders played very well. I repeat: we had a lot of possession. The Ukrainian defenders had to run and work hard. But they did everything right tactically. I was constantly looking for space around me, but there was none.
We know how much Zinchenko can create and be dangerous at the goal. Today he worked hard in defence and scored in attack. But I can only praise their work in defence. We shared the points with Ukraine and we are happy with that.
The main message to Ukraine is that we are with you, the whole world is with you. We express our support not only to the people of football, but also to the people of Ukraine, all Ukrainians. It's been 12 months now - even more. It is hard to see what is happening to Ukraine. I want to wish your country all the best," Maddison said.
