UEFA is working on a project to revolutionise the format of club European Cup tournaments from the 2027/28 season onwards, according to El Pais.
According to the source, at the moment on this account are active joint discussions between representatives of UEFA and the European Club Association (ECA).
According to the ideologists of the project, the number of European Cup tournaments will not change, but they will be called differently:
- Super League
- Europa League
- Candidates League.
The main change in the format of the tournaments is that each of them will be represented by three divisions of 18 teams each.
At the end of each season, the two worst teams in the Super League will move to the Europa League, while the two best teams in the Europa League will be promoted to the Super League. In the case of relegation/relegation between the Europa League and the Candidates League, the transition zone will have not two but four teams.
Recall, earlier UEFA officially announced the nearest change in the format of the European Cups. Starting from the season-2026/27 in all three tournaments will no longer be divided into groups, and will be applied "Swiss system". In the single division, each team will play eight matches (six in the Conference League) against different opponents - four at home and four away. The first eight teams on points will advance to the 1/8 finals of the tournament, and another eight tickets to this stage will be played in a play-off round with the teams ranked 9-24.
