In the 56th minute, Borussia Monchengladbach player Kaoru Itakura was cautioned for a flagrant foul. In the 66th minute, another yellow card followed, this time to Stefan Bell of FSV Mainz 05. In the 64th minute, both teams made tactical substitutions in an attempt to shake things up and find new ways to break through the opposition defence. For Borussia Monchengladbach, Florian Neuhaus was replaced by Keenan Kone, while Jonas Hofmann was replaced by Jean-Pierre Sibatcheu.
Alassane Plea also replaced Nathanael Ngouma. For Mainz 05, Lee Jae-Sung came on in place of Ayman Barcock and Anis El-Ghazi came on in place of Benjamin Gruda. The second half saw an incredible turn of events as Mainz 05 took the lead in the 75th minute. Aymen Barcock struck a powerful shot that left Borussia Monchengladbach's goalkeeper dazed and the ball was in the net, giving his team a 2-1 lead. However, Borussia Monchengladbach continued to fight and in the 88th minute they got their goal. Joe Scully, who came on as a substitute, showed great composure and skill to score the decisive goal that saved a point for the team. The match ended 2-2. Both teams showed great teamwork and commitment throughout the match, leaving the fans enthused until the final whistle. The draw meant that neither team could win all three points, but it showed the talent and competitiveness that makes the Bundesliga one of the most exciting football leagues in the world.
