Nice's Algerian footballer Youssef Athal may leave the team early because of his public support for Hamas (note: Hamas is a Palestinian Islamic movement and party, as well as a terrorist organisation). Hamas is a Palestinian Islamist movement and political party and a terrorist organisation at the same time), RMC Sport reports.
On social media, Yousef Atal posted a video of a preacher calling on like-minded people to unite and organise a "rainy day for the Jews".
- I believe that Atal should apologise for this post and condemn Hamas' actions. If he doesn't do so, he has no place in our club," said the mayor of the city, Christian Estrosi.
It should be added that the player later deleted the post. The club bosses have not yet commented on the situation.
As a reminder, Hamas's attack on Israel began on 7 October 2023 at around 6:30 local time with a massive rocket attack from Gaza and the invasion of the country by armed groups. The attack killed many Israelis, mostly civilians, and foreigners. The Israeli government declared a state of emergency and launched retaliatory rocket attacks on the Gaza Strip.
