Former Shakhtar Donetsk footballer Oleh Matveyev shared his thoughts with UPL TV about the Pitmen's coaching changes.
Oleg Matveev- I have always defended Patrick, I like him as a person and a coach. He worked for many years in Shakhtar's academy. It must have been difficult for him in the first team, because he failed to show the level that Jovetic did in a short time, and this contrast worked against him. I think he didn't have enough time. On the other hand, we can't say that in these 12 matches under his leadership there was any kind of handwriting and play.
- Why did it happen now, when you beat Antwerp and so much time has passed since that match?
- To be honest, we beat Antwerp thanks to a lot of luck. We didn't win the game, but we got the points. Apparently, the club's management was analysing the situation during this time. The president probably talked to the managers and they made decisions.
- Who can lead the team?
- I think it will be a foreigner. There is no one free from contractual obligations to invite Ukrainians, except to take them from other teams.
- Who from other UPL clubs could be interesting?
- It's hard to say who could pull Shakhtar. There is an experienced Markevich, but he is at Karpaty, why would he change anything now? Perhaps Skrypnyk would cope with this role.
- According to rumours, Dario Srna will at least temporarily coach Shakhtar. What is your reaction?
- Why not?!! It's been a long time coming. He has played a lot for good coaches, and he has already worked with so many coaches as a functionary. Another question is what will come of it at this point in the season. I don't think he will stage a game in six months and we will go and beat Barcelona or win the Ukrainian league.
- What can such a change of coach affect in the first place?
- The climate will definitely change in the team, the players will definitely listen to Dario. He is a club legend, everyone knows and respects him. It is interesting how he will build the training process, because he has never had such experience. But the fact that his team will have no problems with discipline and atmosphere is for sure.
