Brazilian President Lula da Silva has commented on the awarding of the eighth Ballon d'Or to Argentine forward Lionel Messi.

"Messi is 36 years old. He was a world champion with the Argentine national team and this year he won the Ballon d'Or. He should be an inspiration to the kids who are shown on TV and then they disappear. How many years has it been since Brazil has had a real idol like him?" - da Silva was quoted as saying by the All About Argentina Twitter page.
