Atletico Madrid started the game brightly and took the lead in the 17th minute. Alvaro Morata struck as a result of a well-executed attack, which sent the fans into a frenzy. This goal gave Atletico Madrid some much needed momentum and they continued to dominate the game. Just five minutes later, Atletico Madrid doubled their lead. This time it was Angel Correa who initiated the play, showing some great dribbling and then coolly headed the ball past the Almeria goalkeeper. Atletico led 2-0 by half-time and it looked like the game was under control. However, Almeria came out for the second half with renewed determination. They pressed and tried to exploit any weaknesses in Atletico's defence. In the 62nd minute, Leo Baptistao scored, reducing the lead to one goal. Realising the growing threat from Almeria, Atletico Madrid made several tactical substitutions to change the course of the match. In the 60th minute, Alvaro Morata was replaced by Memphis Depay, and a minute later Rodrigo de Paul made way for Saul Niguez. These changes gave the team fresh energy and helped them regain control of the game. Towards the end of the match, both teams made new substitutions to try and find a turning point. César Azpilicueta, Nicolás Molina and Renan Lodi came in for Atlético Madrid, while Almeria had Raul Embarba, Aleix Pozo and Iván Baba. These tactical changes added new moments to the game, but in the end the score remained unchanged. In the 90th minute, Atletico Madrid's Koke received a yellow card for an untimely attack. This late disciplinary offence did not affect the outcome of the match, but emphasised the intensity and competitiveness of the encounter. After the final whistle, Atletico Madrid claimed a 2-1 victory over Almeria. This result allowed Atletico to maintain their lead in the La Liga standings and further strengthen their title hopes.
