After a brilliant performance in the final of Euro 2023 U-21, when Ruslan Rotan's men reached the semi-finals and won a historic pass to the Olympic Games (Paris 2024), the Ukrainian national team was led by a foreign specialist for the first time in its history. Ruslan Rotan will continue to work with his team, which has become the Olympic team, and Unai Melgosa has already been preparing the Ukrainians for the Euro 2025 U-21 qualifiers, which started in September.
And his first results were very successful. Under the Spaniard's leadership, our youth team won five victories (with one defeat in a sparring match with the Germans), and in terms of the percentage of matches won (83.33%), Unai Melgosa is the best coach in the history of the Ukrainian U-21 national team.
And in the Euro 2025 U-21 qualifying round, we have a one hundred per cent result, after the first round Ukraine (15 points) is ahead of England (12) and Serbia (9). However, the most difficult matches are ahead - both meetings with the Serbs (6 September and 15 October) plus the second part of the confrontation with the English (11 October), who will want to avenge the disappointing defeat in Kosice, Slovakia.
It will be recalled that the winners of the nine groups and the three best teams that will take second place will go directly to the final tournament. Six more teams that will take second place will play playoff matches, and three winners will also play in the final tournament scheduled for 12-29 June 2025 in eight cities of Slovakia. The hosts of the tournament are already in the final round.

The representation of players born in 2004 in the Ukrainian youth national team has increased. Yegor Yarmolyuk from English side Brentford, who made his U-21 debut back in November 2020, was first joined by Kyrylo Sigeev (November 2022), and then by Andriy Buleza, Ivan Losenko and Bohdan Slyubyk (September 2023). In November 2023, Ivan Varfolomeyev (Czech Slovan) was included in the reserve squad for the match against Azerbaijan.
