Antonio in the 21st minute and levelled the score. Just before the break, M. Kudus scored a goal for West Ham, and the teams went into the break with the score 2:1. The second half started with another West Ham goal, this time from J. Bowen in the 48th minute, and West Ham increased their lead to 3:1.
Newcastle made a number of substitutions, trying to turn the tide of the match: V. Livramento, J. Willock, E. Kraft and H. Barnes came into the game. In the 77th minute another penalty was awarded to Newcastle's goal, which was realised by A. Isak and brought the team within striking distance of West Ham. The drama continued when in the 83rd minute H. Barnes scored a goal, levelling the score 3:3. With minutes remaining in the match, Newcastle completed their comeback with another goal from H. Barnes in the 90th minute for a dramatic 4-3 victory. The match ended on an unpleasant note for Newcastle as A. Gordon received a red card in added time after quickly receiving two yellow cards in a row. Despite the setback, Newcastle held on for the win and secured all three points in a thrilling encounter at St James' Park.
