News from the camp of Ukraine's rival in the Euro-2024 group. The situation with the future of the head coach of the Romanian national team Edward Iordanescu and the national team itself has reached a deadlock. It's all about the 45-year-old specialist's contract with the Romanian Football Federation, which expires immediately after Euro-2024 (or rather, after the final match of the tournament for the Romanian national team).
Initially, Iordanescu was supposed to work at his post until the end of the qualifying cycle of Euro 2024, but, according to the terms of the contract, the fact that the Romanian national team reached the finals of the European Championship automatically meant the extension of the agreement for the period of the national team's performance at the European championship.
Since December, the Romanian Football Federation (FFR) and Iordanescu have been negotiating a new contract, but have been unable to reach an agreement. According to Gazeta Sporturilor, FFR president Razvan Burlianu held two face-to-face meetings with the coach, but in both cases the negotiations came to nothing.
The publication writes that the main point of the new contract is the task to take the national team to the World Cup-2026. Jordanescu agrees with this condition, but he categorically refuses to accept a number of other clauses, which describe what other "intermediate conditions" can be used to terminate the agreement prematurely without any financial compensation.
In the end, it came to the point where the Federation's leadership put pressure on Iordanescu and, in fact, gave him an ultimatum. And this only caused a new dissatisfaction of the coach. It was for this reason that a month ago the specialist refused to go as part of the Romanian delegation to the draw for the next season's Nations League.
As a result, the situation has reached an absolute deadlock. FFR has set itself the goal before the start of Euro-2024 to close the question of who will lead the Romanian national team in the qualifying cycle of the World Cup-2026, but the current coach of the national team in his position remains adamant.
In conclusion, the source assures that the chances that Iordanescu will remain in his post are now very slim and, most likely, the Romanian national team will start its performance at Euro 2024 amid a conflict situation.
