England head coach Gareth Southgate commented on the defeat of his team in the final of Euro 2024 from Spain.
"Spain was the strongest in the tournament. We didn't control the ball well enough, but we did everything right except for the last ten minutes. I'm devastated - I'll speak for everyone, really. The players were absolutely incredible. Very proud of what they did. We just came up just a little bit short.
Losing in the final is incredibly hard. First of all, congratulations to Spain. They were the best in the tournament - they were also stronger today. Our players were incredible and it was impossible to do more in terms of drive, effort and character. I am very proud of this squad of players. They could not have given more to me or to the country. For me the key today was possession of the ball and we lacked control.
We've had two finals and a semi-final in the last eight years. We have a lot of young guys who will be playing for the national team for another six to eight years. They are frustrated now but they will come around after a while," Southgate was quoted as saying by UEFA's official website.
