Unai Melgosa, the head coach of the youth national team of Ukraine, spoke about the decision-making process for calling up players to the youth team.
"As the head coach of the youth national team of Ukraine, I am also responsible for communication with the first team - the national team. I can tell you 100% that the person who makes the choice about a player is the head coach of each team. And this is even spelled out in the agreement with the UAF.
I am a coordinator, but I have never told any of the U-17 or U-19 coaches which player they need to call up. The head coach receives information from analysts and coordinators who offer him the best options. The coach, having received this information, makes the final decision. He meets with me, and if I have any questions, he tells me why he chose this player or that player.
Of course, everyone will be responsible for the consequences of possible mistakes, but this is especially true for the head coach. It cannot be otherwise. Therefore, I repeat, the final decision on the selection of players is made by the head coach of the team," Melgosa said.
