UEFA has appointed referees for the first play-off match of the Champions League qualification round between Dynamo Kyiv and Austrian Salzburg, which will be held next Wednesday, August 21, in Lublin, Poland.
All referees represent Switzerland. The referee in the field is Sandro Scherer. He will be assisted on the lines by Jonas Erni and Susanne Küng. Fourth referee: Lionel Tschudi. Also, the VAR video assisted refereeing system will be used at the match under the direction of Fedayya San.
As for the head referee for the upcoming encounter, the 36-year-old Scherer has been officiating international matches since 2015 and has worked 95 such matches (total at club level and at national team level in all age group competitions).
Most recently, this past Wednesday, August 14, Scherer was the head referee for the 2-0 UEFA Super Cup match between Real Madrid and Italian side Atalanta. The Swiss has not yet been involved in other international matches of the season 2024/25.
Scherer has not yet served matches involving Dynamo Kyiv, but he is familiar with Ukrainian soccer both at the club and national team levels. But only the representatives of Ukraine have not yet won with this referee.
