The legendary Ukrainian forward Andriy Shevchenko, known, among other things, for his performances with “Milan,” commented on the news that he will be inducted into the Italian Football Hall of Fame in the “Foreign Player” category.

Andriy Shevchenko

“Dear Italian football!

This is a letter from a Ukrainian child who dreamed of coming to you.

Our first meeting happened on television, and I immediately fell in love with you. I saw Maldini, Baresi, Maradona, Platini, Van Basten, Baggio, Vialli and froze, as one does in front of the greatest works of art.

I saw the passion of the people, almost a religion. I saw full stadiums with history.

My first trip abroad in childhood was to Italy, first to Rome, then to Agropoli for a tournament. I was immediately struck by everything in the people, especially their generosity. I felt good here and thought: „I must return here at all costs“.

And that’s what happened.

Dear “Milan,” thank you for believing in me. From the very first day, you made me feel like a member of your family. We won a lot together, and I met extraordinary people, especially the Berlusconi family, Adriano Galliani, Ariedo Braida, the Maldini family. One becomes a Milanista from the first day and forever.

To enter the Italian Football Hall of Fame is a huge privilege, and for this, I thank all my partners at “Milan,” the club’s leadership, and its fans.

Coverciano, where I am today, is not only the home of Italy; it is known everywhere. All the greatest coaches have come from here, and I would like to say one thing to you guys from the national team: Italian football is loved all over the world. Protect it and respect it.

Finally, I would like to thank all of Italy for supporting Ukraine in the most challenging moment of our history. What is normal for others is hope for us. Hope that we are still here, every day and forever.

Italy, I love you.

Andriy,” — Shevchenko wrote on his Instagram page.
