Former striker of Kyiv Dynamo Andriy Shevchenko shared his memories of the team’s performance in the 1998/99 season, when the "white-blues" reached the semifinals of the Champions League.
"It was a great moment. In the history of Dynamo, there have been many super-class players and bright teams associated with such a great coach as Valeriy Vasilyevich Lobanovskyi. He always created very great teams. When I was still very young, I went to watch: Blokhin, Zavarov, Belanov, Mykhailychenko, Demyanenko. Before that, there were Kolotov and Muntyan. These were great teams.
And then we were put on par with these top teams in the history of Dynamo that won European trophies. And we were a bit unlucky. Our team was young. Maybe we didn’t believe in ourselves yet. And we lacked a bit of experience. I think if we had believed in ourselves more, we would have won the Champions Cup. But even so, I think it was a good result.
And the most important thing is the reaction of the fans. They waited for us to play at that level again. The overflowing 'Olympic' stadium will always be remembered, as well as what was happening before the match. Everyone went in believing that the team could win,” Shevchenko said on the YouTube channel "Zhenya Yanovich."
