The head coach of the Georgian national team, Vili Sanyol, summed up yesterday’s match against the Ukrainian national team (1:1) in the Nations League.
“We started the game very well, but after an error, we conceded a goal, and it became difficult for us. We didn’t play very well during the last 20 minutes of the first half. After conceding the goal, it was morally challenging for the team to play; we needed time to react to this setback, but this is part of our learning process. It’s a tough path, but it’s part of our development. We talked about this at halftime, and I am glad that the team reflected all of this on the field in the second half.
It’s hard to analyze right after the match, but I am very satisfied with the second half; we did a great job in this segment of the match, and it was clear that each player on our team has a very strong mentality. It was one of our best second halves during my time with the team. Therefore, we are a little disappointed with the result. But there’s nothing to be done: at this level, every mistake has a very high price.
Just 5 years ago, Georgia played in Division “D”; now we compete in Division “B,” and right before the final round, we have a chance to move up to Division “A.” This reflects our development. Therefore, we will approach the final match with the Czech Republic with corresponding ambitions, and anything can happen in this match.
But I must note that if we move to Division “A,” it won’t be a sign that we have become fantastic. Conversely, if we remain in Division “B,” it won’t indicate that we have become a bad team. It’s not about winning or losing, but about the development process that we must constantly improve. If we want to confirm the level we showed in the summer at Euro-2024, we must continue to develop and work,” - quotes Sanyol’s words europop.ge.
