A touching scene occurred at the end of the Champions League match between RB Leipzig and Aston Villa (2:3). RB Leipzig head coach Marco Rose saw the linesman with tears in his eyes after the final whistle.
“I asked him what was happening, and he told me it was his last game — he is 49 years old. It’s a nice, emotional story. I supported him and told him that now he will have more time to take care of his family,” Rose is quoted by Bild.
As it later turned out, this match was the last game for Alessandro Giallatini as a professional referee. The 49-year-old linesman, who had been a FIFA official since 2013, decided to retire.
