Former head coach of Kyiv's Dynamo Mircea Lucescu spoke about which team he considers the best in the history of Romanian football.
The Romania national team of 1970 was the best team in the history of Romanian football. It was a team that played with a focus on the quality of players, particularly on the stunning passing technique.
After that World Cup in Mexico, where we stood toe to toe against Brazil with Pelé in the lineup (2:3) and England (0:1), we achieved nothing special,” Lucescu said on TVR Sport.
Interestingly, Lucescu did not mention a word about the historic success of "Steaua" from 1986, which first managed to win the European Champions Cup (something no Romanian club managed before or after), and then also secured the UEFA Super Cup by defeating the formidable Kyiv Dynamo (1:0) of that time in this single-match tournament.
But interestingly, the Romania national team of 1970 is the team whose colors were defended, among others, by Lucescu (who was its captain). At the 1970 World Cup, it failed to advance from the group.
