Discussions are gaining momentum in UEFA about canceling extra time in Champions League playoff matches, reports The Guardian. If this change is approved, in the event of a draw at the end of regular time, a penalty shootout will be immediately held.

According to the publication, the initiators of this innovation (which includes player unions and top clubs) insist that abolishing extra time in the Champions League playoffs will reduce the burden on players due to the current tight match schedule. The new format of the Champions League, in which teams now play 8 matches instead of 6 in the main stage of the tournament, has only increased the pressure on UEFA regarding this issue.

It seems that if such a decision is made, the regulations will change similarly, at least in the Europa League, where teams also now play 8 matches in the main stage of the tournament.
