I continue to tell about the coaches who successfully led Kyiv’s “Dynamo” over the years.

My story is about the director of the first loud victory in the biography of the Dynamo club, Oleg Oshenko—an honored master of sports, an honored coach of the USSR and Ukraine.

Oleg Oshenko

Coaching Path

At the age of 40, Oleg Alexandrovich Oshenko headed Kyiv’s “Dynamo”, where he worked in 1951−1956 and 1959. Then came the Mykolaiv “Shipbuilder” (1960), Donetsk “Shakhtar” (1961−1969), Kharkiv “Metalist” (1975−1976).

In 1970−1975, he worked as the head of the football department of the Ukrainian SSR Sports Committee. He was the chairman of the Football Federation of Ukraine.

As a coach, Oshenko used advanced methods of team preparation in his work. He was demanding of the football players, an experienced psychologist, and tried to understand each protégé, utilizing their best playing qualities, encouraging players to constantly improve their game level.

While at “Shakhtar”, he implemented daily two-a-day training sessions. He invited coaches in athletics, acrobatics, and boxing to work with the team. They played for “Shakhtar”, invited by Oleg Alexandrovich, Valery Lobanovsky and Oleg Bazilevich, who had finished their career at Kyiv’s “Dynamo”.

After Oshenko left the “miners” team, it was relegated from the top league. However, it returned to the strongest companies a year later.

During Oshenko’s time in Kyiv’s “Dynamo”, players from Transcarpathia appeared: Vasily Turyanovich, Yozhef Sabo, Andrey Havashi, and also—Andrey Biba, Oleg Bazilevich, Vladimir Anufrienko…

In my opinion, Oleg Oshenko laid the foundation for that “Dynamo”, which won the club’s first championship “gold” (1961).

FC “Dynamo” was also served by Oleg Alexandrovich’s son—Mikhail. He was an associate of Valery Lobanovsky, an assistant to the great coach during the triumphant march of the Dynamo players in the 70−80s of the last century (in particular, he gathered valuable information about foreign clubs and national teams), he was Valery Vasilyevich’s assistant during his work in the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait.

“Crystal” Triumph of the “White-Blues”

The most significant achievement of Oleg Alexandrovich Oshenko in Kyiv’s “Dynamo” was winning the USSR Cup in 1954. This was the first major trophy for the Kyiv team in their history. There were 8 more cup victories afterward, but the most memorable was that first one.

The path to the final was not easy. The victorious march to the prize began in Kyiv with a win (4:2) over “Spartak” from Vilnius. Then there was success in Moscow in a match with the local “Spartak” (3:1), which had previously blocked Kyiv’s path in cup tournaments six times.

In Kyiv, at the Khrushchev Stadium field, victory came to the hosts (3:1) in a fierce confrontation with CSCKA in extra time.

Extra time was needed in the Moscow semifinal with Leningrad “Zenith” (1:0).

The tournament final took place in Moscow on October 20, 1954, under difficult weather conditions. In thick fog with precipitation in the form of rain and wet snow, “Dynamo” (Kyiv) and “Spartak” (Yerevan) faced off. The minimal victory for the Ukrainian team was—2:1.

The “Crystal” ball was scored in the net of Sergey Zatykan by the Dynamo inside player Mikhail Komane. The first goal of the winners was scored by Viktor Terentyev. By the way, he received the pass from Komane.

The beautiful prize was handed to Dynamo captain Andrey Zazroev. Thus, the national cup went to Ukraine for the first time, to Kyiv!

In that memorable tournament, the following played: Arkadiy Laryonov (5 matches), Vitaliy Golubev (5), Tiberiy Popovich (5), Viktor Terentyev (5, 1 goal), Andrey Zazroev (5, 4), Mikhail Komane (5, 5), Viktor Fomin (5, 1), Ernst Yust (4), Alexander Koltsov (4, 1), Vladimir Bogdanovich (4), Vladimir Gramatikopulo (3, 1), Pavel Vinkovatov (3), Mikhail Mikhailina (2), Oleg Makarov (4), Evgeniy Lemeshko (1).

Along with the triumphant players, coach Oleg Oshenko and his assistant Anton Idzkovski became champions.

The names of the winners of the USSR Cup-1954 are inscribed on a separate page in the glorious history of FC “Dynamo” (Kyiv), which will celebrate its 100th anniversary in May 2027.
