Former Argentine defender Luis Galván, who was part of the team that won the 1978 World Cup, died on Monday at the age of 77, the Argentine Football Association reported.

Galván had been in the Reina Fabiola clinic in Córdoba for several weeks with pneumonia.

Luis played as a central defender in the 1978 World Cup final in Buenos Aires, where Argentina defeated the Netherlands 3:1. He also represented Argentina in the 1982 World Cup in Spain, having made a total of 34 appearances for the national team. He ended his international career in 1983.

Galván continued to play for his hometown club Talleres de Córdoba, setting a club record of 503 matches over 17 seasons in two periods: from 1970 to 1982 and from 1986 to 1987.
