Former Milan midfielder Riccardo Montolivo responded negatively to the possible appointment of Gennaro Gattuso as head coach of the Italian national team.

The dispute dates back to their time working together at Milan when Gattuso led the team from 2017 to 2019. Montolivo was the captain of that “rossoneri” team. With Gattuso’s arrival, the captaincy passed to another player, and then Riccardo was practically completely excluded from the game during the last season. This contributed to his decision to hang up his boots at the end of the 2018/19 season.
