The former head coach of Kyiv’s «Dynamo» Mircea Lucescu, who currently leads the Romania national team, announced to the leadership of the Romanian Football Federation that he will leave his position in the summer of 2026, reports AS.ro.
Mircea LucescuIf the Romania national team manages to qualify for the final part of the 2026 World Cup, the 79-year-old specialist will remain with the national team only for the duration of its participation in this tournament. Otherwise, Lucescu will resign immediately after the final match of the Romania national team before the upcoming World Cup.
The main reason the coach made such a decision is that he will turn 80 years old in the coming days, and his age will no longer allow him to lead the national team.
The source adds that the leadership of the Romanian Football Federation considers the optimal successor to Lucescu in the Romania national team to be his previous coach Edward Iordănescu, who currently heads Warsaw’s «Legia».
