Exactly fifty years ago, on October 6, 1975, having defeated Bayern Munich 2—0 at the Republican Stadium in front of 102,000 spectators (!) in the second match for the UEFA Super Cup, Dynamo Kyiv became the holder of the trophy.

The path to this unforgettable achievement began on September 18, 1974, with a match in the 1/16 of the Cup Winners' Cup at home against the Bulgarian club CSKA “Septemvriysko Zname” (Sofia) — 1:0. Dynamo secured the same score in the capital of Bulgaria. The goals in those matches were scored by Oleg Blokhin.
Then, under the guidance of Valeriy Lobanovskyi and Oleg Bazylevych, they defeated the representative of the German Bundesliga “Eintracht” (Frankfurt) in the 1/8 finals — 3:2 (away) and 2:1 (in Kyiv). Goals were scored by Oleg Blokhin, Volodymyr Muntyan, and Volodymyr Onyshchenko (three times).
In the quarter-finals, Kyivans won against “Bursaspor” (Turkey) twice, 1:0 in Bursa and 2:0 in Kyiv. The goals were scored by Volodymyr Onyshchenko, Viktor Kolotov, and Volodymyr Muntyan.
In the semi-finals, “Dynamo” faced a tough opponent — the Dutch PSV (Eindhoven). At home, our club scored three “clean” goals (Viktor Kolotov, Volodymyr Onyshchenko, and Oleg Blokhin) — 3:0. However, in the Netherlands, the Kyiv team lost — 1:2 (with a header in a beautiful flight from Leonid Buryak). Nevertheless, according to the results of the semi-final matches, our footballers emerged victorious, earning the right to play in the decisive match.
Final of the Cup Winners' Cup
On May 14, 1975, in Basel (Switzerland) at the “St. Jakob” stadium, Dynamo battled for the prize against the Hungarian club “Ferencváros”. The Kyiv team triumphed — 3:0. Volodymyr Onyshchenko scored two goals, and Oleg Blokhin scored one.
The Cup Winners' Cup was presented to Dynamo’s captain Viktor Kolotov by the then UEFA president Artemio Franchi, and the players received gold medals.
In this historic final, the winners played with the following roster: Yevhen Rudakov, Volodymyr Troshkin, Mykhailo Fomenko, Stepan Reshko, Viktor Matviyenko, Volodymyr Muntyan, Viktor Kolotov, Anatoliy Konkov, Leonid Buryak, Oleg Blokhin, Volodymyr Onyshchenko.
Kyiv rejoiced, and upon arrival at Boryspil airport, the triumphs were greeted by hundreds of fans.
Defeating the Famous “Bayern”
Having seized the Cup Winners' Cup, Dynamo Kyiv earned the right to compete for the UEFA Super Cup. And they received a formidable opponent — the star-studded “Bayern” (Munich), the European Champions' Cup holder.
In their squad were brilliant stars, world champions — Sepp Maier, Hans-Georg Schwarzenbeck, Franz Beckenbauer, Gerd Müller, Jupp Kapellmann, and other superstars.
At the Olympic Stadium in Munich on September 9, the Kyivans sensationally won the first match — 1:0 (Blokhin, 66). 32 thousand Bayern fans left the arena disheartened, believing this loss was accidental. Munich fans were confident their team would win by the necessary score in the return game in Kyiv and secure the Super Cup.
And Bayern’s players believed in their success in the Ukrainian capital. When welcoming the guests at the airport, I asked their captain Franz Beckenbauer whether his team believes in their success in Kyiv?
— We will fly home with the Super Cup. There can be no other way, — said the famous “Kaiser” Franz.
More than 550,000 applications were submitted for tickets to the match “Dynamo” — “Bayern”. Only 102,000 lucky fans made it to the stands of the Republican Stadium on October 6. For all 90 minutes, Dynamo fans actively supported their beloved team.
And it delivered the UEFA Super Cup to Kyiv and Ukraine, defeating a super-strong opponent — 2:0. The goals against Sepp Maier were scored by Oleg Blokhin (40, 53).
The familiar UEFA president Artemio Franchi presented the Super Cup to the Dynamo players. However, the gold medals were not able to be given. As it turned out, they got lost at the airport. When the awards were found, they were immediately handed over to our footballers.
In both matches, the squad of the prize holders included: Yevhen Rudakov, Volodymyr Troshkin, Mykhailo Fomenko, Stepan Reshko, Viktor Matviyenko, Anatoliy Konkov, Leonid Buryak, Viktor Kolotov, Volodymyr Muntyan, Oleg Blokhin, Volodymyr Onyshchenko, Volodymyr Veremeyev, Valeriy Zuiev, Petro Slobodyan, and Alexander Damin.
The coaches were Valeriy Lobanovskyi and Oleg Bazylevych.
Unfortunately, the mentors of that brilliant team and their players — Rudakov, Troshkin, Kolotov, Matviyenko, Zuiev, Fomenko, Konkov, Slobodyan are no longer with us. But they live in our hearts and will continue to live as long as they are remembered.
Spectacles of True Football
The year 1975 was truly triumphant for Dynamo. The collection of the club, which will celebrate its glorious 100th anniversary on May 13, 2027, now includes the Cup Winners' Cup and the UEFA Super Cup.
International sports media named “Dynamo” (Kyiv) the second football club in the world.
“European football needs such matches — beautiful, fair, spectacular. And such victors as Kyiv’s “Dynamo” (UEFA president Artemio Franchi).
“The Kyivans — there’s not a single stereotypical ending, the whole game is effortless, in a word, a performance of true football” (French newspaper “L’Equipe”).
“Dynamo” proved to be an original team. The Kyivans' play is saturated with thought, skill, and inspiration” (newspaper “Dello sport”, Italy).
“We remember the Basel lesson, we consider ourselves part of Dynamo’s high sporting form. We are glad for your victory” (telegram from Budapest by the footballers of “Ferencváros”).
As the results of the 1975 season, “Dynamo” (Kyiv) became the champion of the country for the seventh time.
At 36, Valeriy Lobanovskyi and a year older Oleg Bazylevych became honored coaches of the union. Ten Dynamo players were awarded the titles of honored masters of sports.
Oleg Blokhin became the holder of the “Golden Ball” (award by the Paris publication France Football for the best footballer in Europe) and the best football player of the country. Blokhin also turned out to be the top scorer of the league (18 goals).
...All good things are not forgotten, and all good things are indeed Dynamo football.
