Former player of the Ukrainian national team and the author of its first goal, Ivan Hetsko, about the match against Iceland in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Ivan Hetsko— We have very high-class players who play at a high level. The lack of team play and results is a bit concerning. It’s not entirely clear why this happens. However, all opponents understand perfectly well that you have to prepare as thoroughly as possible for the match against Ukraine.
Still, I prefer Ukraine over Iceland. Let’s be realistic: look at the history — where and when did Iceland play and where did it defeat our team. Yes, there was an instance, but that’s more of a paradox. It’s wild to me, but that’s life. Football is played everywhere now, and any result is possible.
Therefore, it’s very important to realize that we might not get a second chance. We are obligated to work only for results and victory.
I expect that from the first minutes it will be a closed and cautious game. As they say, a game to a mistake — both teams will wait for the opponent’s mistake. If the first half goes without critical mistakes, it will be quite cautious and at a closed tempo.
The second half will undoubtedly make its adjustments. If the score after the break is 0:0, the team will have to act more actively: break through the opponent’s defense, take progressive actions to achieve results.
We will move forward because there is no other option. We need to win like never before. And I’m sure everyone understands this — both the coaching staff and the players.
The match in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers is not just a game; it’s an opportunity for the players to show themselves, raise their level, and make a statement on the international stage. They understand this. They are mature professionals and know that to «sell» themselves and reach a high level, they need to display maximum football in such matches.
I would like us to win. I think the match result will be minimal. We will win 2:1 or 1:0, said Hetsko.
