The head coach of the Romanian national team, Mircea Lucescu, lost his temper at a press conference dedicated to today’s 2026 World Cup qualifying match against Austria.
Mircea LucescuWhen asked why he called up five players from “Steaua” and none from “Botoșani” for the current training camp, Lucescu couldn’t hold back his emotions.
“There are players who can be outstanding in training, but when placed in the starting lineup, they lose their bearings. And there are players who are simply not ready for the national team. When you bring them into the national team, they look completely different, they lose orientation on the field. Conversely, there are also good players in the national team who cannot handle the international level in clubs.
The national team is formed by values and experience, and only then the current form of the players. There are players who can’t take a step for fear in the national team.
But all of this has no relevance to the matter and leave me alone with these kinds of questions! I see you’re all coaches! Bravo to you!” said Lucescu.
