Friends, I continue to browse the pages of the glorious history of FC Dynamo (Kyiv) with you, which will celebrate its glorious centenary on May 13, 2027.

Coleraine — Dynamo — 1:6, 1965. Dynamo’s First European Cup Match

If you get acquainted with the teams that came to Kyiv for friendly matches from 1954 to 1965, their level was quite high. Nevertheless, Dynamo successfully played against them and brought joy to its fans.

In June 1954, the Danish Viking was defeated in Kyiv — 7:1. In July, Dynamo played its first match with the national team of another country — the team of Norway was defeated 2:5. In September, the Kyivans defeated the team of Bulgaria — 1:0, and in July 1955, at the Republican Stadium, Dynamo crushed the national team of Lebanon 18:0.

In 1956, the Dynamo players held four matches: against Udarnik (Sofia, Bulgaria) — 2:0, Austria (Vienna, Austria) — 4:3, Anderlecht (Brussels, Belgium) — 2:1, Energie (Brașov, Romania) — 1:1. In 1957, three friendly games took place. With the same score of 3:1, Brazilian clubs Bahia (Sao Salvador) and Vasco da Gama (Rio de Janeiro) were defeated in Kyiv.

In 1958, the Kyivans played eight international games. Here are the results of some of them: Nacional (Montevideo, Uruguay) — 0:0, Wienna (Vienna, Austria) — 9:1, Dinamo (Zagreb, Croatia) — 1:3.

In the 1959 season, London’s Tottenham Hotspur was the first English club with which Dynamo played matches. It ended unfortunately for our team — 1:2. Oleg Bazilevich scored his first goal. Then until the end of the 1965 season, the Kyivans played another 20 matches. There were failures: against Madureira (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) — 1:2, Glasgow Rangers (Scotland) — 1:1, the GDR Olympic team — 1:3, Nacional (Montevideo, Uruguay) — 0:2, Lazio (Rome, Italy) — 1:2. There were also victories: over Sampdoria (Genoa, Italy) — 4:1, Hammarby (Stockholm, Sweden) — 1:0, Stade Français (Paris, France) — 3:1.

Naturally, I did not list the results of all the matches that the Dynamo players played from June 1954 to June 1965. There were 43 in total — 32 victories, 5 draws, 6 defeats.

Fought for Victory

I will not name all the Dynamo players of different generations who played in the 43 matches. Here are some of them, well known to you: Makarov, Golubev, Koman, Yust, Popovich, Erokhin, Zaitsev, Lemeshko, Kanevsky, Voinov, Bazilevich, Lobanovsky, Turianchik, Serebryanikov, Biba, Suchkov, Troyanovsky, Shchegolkov, Khmelnitsky. At different times, Dynamo was headed by Oleg Oshenkov, Vyacheslav Solovyov, Viktor Maslov. With each year, Dynamo increasingly made its presence known on the international stage.

First European Cup Match

On September 2, 1965, in the Cup Winners' Cup match with Coleraine Club (Northern Ireland), the Kyivans debuted in the European Cup tournament. A convincing victory was achieved away — 6:1. The first Dynamo European goal was scored by Kyiv captain Andriy Biba. He distinguished himself once more in this game. Viktor Serebryanikov scored twice, while Oleg Bazilevich and Vitaliy Khmelnitsky each troubled the Coleraine goalkeeper once.

In their debut European Cup match, the Kyivans played in the following lineup. Bannikov, Shchegolkov, Sosnikhin, Turianchik, Ostrovsky, Sabo, V. Levchenko, Bazilevich, Serebryanikov, Biba, Khmelnitsky.

Despite the convincing victory in the away match, on September 8, in the return game in Kyiv, the stands of the central stadium gathered 50,000 spectators — the upper tier was not yet there. Dynamo won — 4:0, Bazilevich (twice), Biba, and Serebryanikov distinguished themselves. The Kyivans were led by Viktor Aleksandrovich Maslov.

On September 2, 1965, in Coleraine, the Kyiv Dynamo players entered the competition for the Cup Winners' Cup. And ten years later, on May 14, 1975, they became the trophy holders, defeating the Hungarian Ferencvaros in the final match in Basel at the St. Jakob Stadium — 3:0. Vladimir Onishchenko (twice) and Oleg Blokhin distinguished themselves in this game.

Along with them, millions of Ukrainian fans were given a victory on that memorable evening in Switzerland: Rudakov, Troshkin, Fomenko, Reshko, Matvienko, Muntean, Konkov, Kolotov (captain), Buryak. The success of his wards was led by Valeriy Lobanovsky.

On May 2, 1986, Lobanovsky’s team won its second Cup Winners' Cup, defeating Atletico Madrid — 3:0 in Lyon. Oleg Blokhin, Oleksandr Zavarov, and Vadym Yevtushenko distinguished themselves. Along with them, the honorary trophy was won in France: Chanov, Bessonov, Baltacha, Bal, Kuznetsov, Demyanenko, Rats, Yakovenko, Yaremchuk, Zavarov.

All good things are not forgotten, and all good things are Dynamo football.
