UEFA joins the Coalition Against Piracy (CAP) and the German Internet Copyright Infringement Center (CUII) to enhance its capabilities and improve data collection in the fight against piracy in key markets.
Following the announcement of a recent innovative partnership with the Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment (ACE), UEFA is pleased to confirm its joining of two new organizations to further strengthen its content protection program.
By becoming a member of the Coalition Against Piracy (CAP) — the anti-piracy arm of the Asia Video Industry Association (AVIA) — UEFA has taken a significant step forward in its commitment to protecting its own content and the interests of broadcast partners in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond. This regional alliance, which brings together the largest rights holders in media and sports, fights against digital piracy through coordinated enforcement measures, site blocking initiatives, strategic engagement with governments and intermediaries, as well as access to specialized research and information.
Recognizing that audiovisual piracy remains a serious issue for this region, UEFA views membership in CAP as a reliable way to expand its anti-piracy capabilities and address specific regional challenges. The membership resulted from a trial phase of collaboration with CAP, during which CAP and UEFA successfully implemented site blocking in Malaysia and Indonesia in the run-up to the UEFA Champions League final. These measures continued throughout the current season.
Separately, UEFA also announces its joining of the independent German anti-piracy organization — the German Internet Copyright Infringement Center (CUII). CUII includes sports rights holders, broadcasters, film, music, video game rights holders, as well as Germany’s largest internet providers. CUII facilitates and coordinates the effective implementation of so-called «site blocking orders» in Germany and stimulates positive legal changes that allow for the rapid and effective enforcement of these measures through cross-industry cooperation. This step positions UEFA as a leader in the fight against piracy in Germany and confirms its commitment to content protection in the country.
This collaboration is only part of UEFA’s broader strategy for implementing a leading anti-piracy program in the industry, which helps protect UEFA and UC3’s commercial interests, as well as their broadcast partners worldwide in all club and national tournaments of UEFA. Recently, UEFA also confirmed its partnership and joint actions with Europol. Such measures within a wide network of organizations and initiatives are vital for protecting revenues from media rights sales, which support the development of football and the sustainment of local programs throughout the European football ecosystem.
