Shakhtar Donetsk is seeking damages from the International Football Federation (FIFA) in the amount of 50 million euros and has filed a corresponding claim with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), appealing against the decision that allows foreign players to unilaterally suspend their contracts with clubs from Ukraine.
According to the source, in July, the Pitmen submitted the claim documents to the office of CAS General Director in Switzerland, Mathieu Reeb.
The dispute is based on a FIFA decision announced on June 21, which states that foreign players and coaches in Ukraine have the right to suspend their contracts with Ukrainian clubs until June 30, 2023, unless between a player or coach and their club by June 30 this year, a different agreement was reached.
At the time of the FIFA verdict, Shakhtar had 14 foreign players on contracts. After the start of the Russian-Ukrainian war, the Pitmen faced significant economic problems, which they intended to cover by selling foreign players. To this end, Shakhtar was actively negotiating with a number of foreign clubs, however, some of them fell through after the announcement of the FIFA verdict on the transfer of legionnaires from Ukraine.
According to Shakhtar CEO Serhiy Palkin, within 48 hours after FIFA's decision, almost all Shakhtar transfer negotiations collapsed, which could have brought the Pitmen tens of millions of euros.
“Everyone thinks that we are one football family. This decision simply crossed out this slogan. We are not one football family, because no one cares about Ukrainian clubs. This is very regrettable. FIFA doesn't care about us," Palkin said.
Let us remind you that earlier the intention to sue FIFA was announced by Shakhtar Football Director Darijo Srna.
