Recall that the team of Igor Kostyuk got into the group with the English Aston Villa and the Czech Slavia. In the opening match, Dynamo defeated the British (1:0), while Slavia beat Aston Villa 2:1, and in the decisive match, Dynamo and Slavia contested a place in the final. The match ended in a 2-2 draw, which suited the Czechs, since with an equal number of points and goal difference, they had one more goal scored.
In the "bronze final" the people of Kiev met with the team of another famous Prague club - "Sparta".
There were few potential scoring chances in the first half of the meeting. The Kyivans, who entered the pre-match formation dressed in the national flags of Ukraine, actively spent the starting minutes, but for most of the first half, Sparta acted more actively and, above all, more aggressively ahead.
The Prague residents put high pressure on Dynamo, starting to meet them close to the White-Blues' penalty area. Dynamo had a lot of ball possession, but mostly in their own half of the field, where the defensive line players played it for a long time. The ball reached the last third a few times. However, at the end of the 40-minute period, just like at the start of the match, the White-Blues played an active segment.
The most dangerous moment at the Sparta goal before the break was a corner from the left flank by Andrey Matkevich, after which the goalkeeper of the Prague residents Matei Chekhal did not hold the ball twisted towards the goal, but managed to correct his mistake, ahead of Nikita Dzenya who ran up.
The second half of the meeting began with a dangerous moment, which was recorded by the players of the Czech team, but Balaba neutralized the threat, getting ahead of the opponent and knocking the ball out of the penalty area in time. The Kievans responded with a potentially scoring chance by Gorbach, who was with the ball in close proximity to the goal, but the opponent's defenders prevented him from hitting, who pushed him away from the ball. Once again, Kremchanin responded to a cross in the penalty area from the depth of the field, but hit his head inaccurately.
But Sparta managed its next moment much more effectively. Vitarigov received the ball on the penalty area line, advanced a few meters and shot low past Avramenko, putting his team ahead. Soon, the hosts got the right to a rather dangerous free kick, but Avramenko managed to get it into the penalty area. Immediately after that, Kremchanin could equalize the score, but from close range he hit the goalkeeper, who was covering the near corner of his possessions.
Time passed steadily, and Dynamo did not manage to realize at least one of their chances. Yes, and the opponent sometimes played quite rough, reducing the attacking potential of our guys. However, a few minutes before the end of regular time, the Ukrainians managed to level the score: Kremchanin found himself in a similar situation as in his previous moment, and with a point-blank shot he was able to break through the goalkeeper who came out to meet him. Already in stoppage time, Yatsik headed past the goalkeeper, but, unfortunately, also past the goal.
So the fate of the winner and third place in the tournament was decided in the penalty shoot-out. Dynamo players performed their kicks better, and thanks to two saves from our goalkeeper Yuriy Avramenko, they became the winners of the match!
