Well-known Ukrainian coach Volodymyr Sharan analyzed the first match of the 3rd qualifying round of the Champions League between Kyiv "Dynamo" and Austrian "Sturm" (1:0), which took place yesterday in Lodz, Poland.
"It was enough to look at Lucescu's face..."
— "Sturm" started the match very actively, and I didn't think that "Dynamo" would be able to turn the game around right away, because the Kyivans did not act very well at the start, said Sharan. — "Sturm" did not realize two goal chances during this period of the meeting. The Austrians had very good scoring chances.
— Did Karavaev's goal change everything?
— Yes, after this goal, the pattern of the game changed. Dinamo felt confidence, which turned into their full advantage. The left flank of Kyiv was very active, where Dubinchak was active.
— Could "Dynamo" have achieved more?
— It was enough to look at the faces of the Dynamo players after the final whistle. The boys were happy with the victory, but Mircea Lucescu was not in the best mood. Of course, he wanted a bigger advantage for his team in the score, and there was reason for that.
— "Sturm" was not impressed at all?
— The Austrian team did not surprise with anything. "Sturm" wanted to play on counterattacks, but it didn't work out. Kyiv's previous opponent is Fenerbahce, stronger than Sturm.
"I wouldn't take that risk"
— Can the not very bright start of the game in the performance of "Dynamo" be explained by the need to conduct reconnaissance?
— Yes, these are tactical moments. Kyivans started very cautiously. But then there were significant gaps between the lines, which was clearly in the hands of "Sturm". Perhaps, in general, there was an instruction from Lucescu to play actively. There was a risk in this, because if "Sturm" had scored, the game would have gone differently...
— Did the loss of Tsygankov due to injury before the start of the match have a very negative effect on the team?
— This could have had an effect, because Verbych is no longer in Dynamo. Shepelev tried to move to the center, freeing the flank for Dubinchak. It turned out not bad. But the biggest guy is Karavaev. Oleksandr also played right midfielder in Zora, so in the match against Sturm he was where he needed to be. Karavaev worthy replaced Tsygankov.
— Why did Lucescu replace Dubinchak and Shepelev?
— Good substitutions. Vivcharenko entered the game well, and Vanat played well. I would not take such a risk, but Lucescu trusts the youth.
"The main thing is for Tsygankov to return"
— I had to hear criticism directed at Besedin for playing with Sturm...
— Besedin is currently not in that condition. The "Dynamo" coaching staff has no other choice. Harmash is a substitute player. The problem with a high-quality center forward has existed in "Dynamo" for more than one year. Everyone wants Besedin to score, but he does a lot of work. And not everyone notices this, but Lucescu sees and understands everything. Nothing, Artem will score and confidence in him will immediately return.
— What do you expect from the second match between Dynamo and Sturm in Graz?
— Dynamo's game added optimism. On the road, where "Sturm" will go forward more actively, the people of Kyiv will have the opportunity to play football that is more comfortable for them. The main thing is for Tsygankov to return. Dynamos will need flank speed in counter-attacks. We will again hope for Dubinchak, for a compact and correct game in defense.
However, one must understand that "Dynamo" will have a hard time in Austria. "Sturm" is a dangerous team that will stir things up on their pitch.
