Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Oleksandr Zubkov spoke about how he came to the decision to leave his former club, the Hungarian Ferencváros.
“The first days of the war were very difficult. During training, I seemed to be absent from the field. I couldn't concentrate on football because of what was happening in my country. Training was hard for me, I lacked concentration. Coaches say to do one thing on the field - I do something completely different.
It was decided that I should perhaps stay at home for a while. It was hard to imagine how long it would take to deal with the whole situation, to pull myself together. In fact, I stayed in the apartment for about two weeks. All I did was sit and listen to the news. It was also unbearable, so I returned to training.
The decision to leave Ferencváros? It was accepted quickly. I was sure that I wanted to leave the club after the end of the season. Hungarians are not Poles. They are not even British or Americans - nations that want to help Ukrainians. I felt strange in Budapest. To be honest, I often had to listen to insulting statements about Ukraine. It was frustrating and I don't understand where it came from. Such situations only strengthened my conviction and confidence that I would change the club as soon as the season ended, ”Sport.tvp.pl quoted Zubkov as saying.
