Kubryak, who is also a neurosurgeon, worked at one of the Dnipro hospitals at the end of March, where he operated on wounded Ukrainian soldiers. Soon he and a group of other doctors left for Mariupol to rescue his defenders. There Kubryak was captured by the invaders.

The Ukrainian referee was in captivity for five months. On September 21, he was released as part of a prisoner exchange, as a result of which more than 200 of its heroic defenders returned to Ukraine.
