Despite winning this meeting, the Uruguayans failed to reach the 1/8 finals of the tournament, losing second place in the group to South Korea in terms of the best difference between goals scored and conceded. The Koreans in the final round sensationally beat Portugal (2:1), and this allowed them to bypass Uruguay.
