Some 14,000 police officers will be deployed across France on Sunday to provide security when that country and Argentina face each other in the 2022 World Cup final.
The security operation, presented publicly to Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin, will concentrate police forces in the capital Paris, where huge crowds are expected in the event of a triumph. The Champs-Elysées was the center of massive celebrations during France's two previous world titles in 1998 and 2018. Four years ago, 600,000 people sang and danced there. On Sunday, the boulevard will be closed to traffic, and 2,750 police officers will be on duty in the area.
The police will be ready for anything after 40 far-right supporters were arrested Wednesday night for trying to join a group celebrating France's victory over Morocco in the semi-finals. In total, after the meeting with Morocco in Paris, 115 people were detained, and the victory was overshadowed by the death of a 14-year-old boy.
