In the 6th minute of the match between Hoffenheim 1899 and Bayer Leverkusen, the guests took the lead after R. Andrić's goal. Unfortunately for the hosts, their powerful attacking game was soon thwarted when the referee awarded D. Geiger a yellow card. J. Frimpong of Bayer Leverkusen was also booked for another incident just moments later. Further problems arose for Hoffenheim when J. Brooks received a yellow card in the 36th minute. The second half began with one of several substitutions made by Hoffenheim. D. Geiger was replaced by K. Dolberg. Almost a minute later, the guests scored the second goal of the match thanks to M. Diaby.
K. Akpoguma of Hoffenheim then received a yellow card before A. Chlošek made it 3–0 with a strike in the 56th minute. The hosts reacted to the gap in the score by making two substitutions at once. Instead of T. Delaney and U. Tokhumka, Angelino and T. Bischof were replaced. Bayer Leverkusen also saw two substitutes enter the field when M. Diaby and A. Chlozek were replaced by E. Palacios and N. Amiri. In the 77th minute, Hoffenheim scored a goal when S. Nsoki scored for the home team. Then Bayer Leverkusen made two more substitutions of their own: D. Sinkgraven and M. Bakker replaced M. Diaby and A. Chlosek. This was followed by the fourth replacement of the guests: K. Demirbay and A. Adly replaced J. Frimpong and K. Bellarabi. However, this was not enough for Hoffenheim to achieve a draw: at the time of the final whistle, the score was 1:3.
