Borussia Dortmund dominated the first half of the game, holding off Leipzig with their solid defense and quick counterattacks. In the 21st minute, Borussia Dortmund was awarded a penalty and M. Reus got to the shooting position. Although the Leipzig goalkeeper got his hand on the ball, he failed to keep it in the net. That moment paved the way for Borussia Dortmund's first goal of the match. The rest of the first half saw a flurry of yellow cards. Borussia Dortmund's S. Ozkan was yellow-carded in the 29th minute, while RB Leipzig's M. Halstenberg and M. Halstenberg were red carded in the 38th and 45th minutes, respectively.

RB Leipzig's persistence paid off in the 74th minute when they scored their first goal of the match off the leg of E. Forsberg. Borussia Dortmund made their final substitutions in the 83rd minute: S. Özkan and J. Brandt replaced M. Dahoud and M. Hummels. RB Leipzig also made one last substitution: K. Nkunku was replaced by T. Werner. The match ended 2-1 in favor of Borussia Dortmund, which held its advantage in the face of a late Leipzig onslaught. It was an energetic match that left the fans in suspense until the final whistle.
